Equipment clearance requirements
Clearances
Under CSA Standards, ENMAX Power crews require 3-meters of clearance on all sides to fully open the doors and use the necessary tools to perform regular maintenance or repairs to electrical equipment.
It is the property owners responsibility to remove any obstruction(s) within the clearance area and pay for the related expenses.
Grass is permitted but no other vegetation(e.g. trees, shrubs, plants, etc) is allowed inside the 3-meter clearance zone.
Electrical Obstructions
ENMAX employees, or agents, must have reasonable and unhindered access to all ENMAX equipment, including meters, for the purpose of reading, testing, maintaining, repairing, and changing that equipment.
An obstruction is defined as something that is preventing ENMAX Power from safely accessing our electrical equipment.
Where ready access to the metering equipment is not given due to locked doors, ENMAX may request a key for its use. ENMAX may install a lockbox for the purpose of keeping the key on site.
Obstructions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Vegetation (e.g. shrubs, trees, plants, etc)
- Rocks
- Lawn decorations
- Temporary and permanent structures (e.g.fence, shed, etc)
- Changing the grade of the area around electrical equipment
- Storing items on or around electrical equipment
- Locked doors
If you receive a door hanger, our crews have identified an obstruction to the electrical equipment on your property.
Metal Fences
There are major issues with metal fences because they can carry electric currents. Therefore, we need metal fences to have a minimum distance of 3-meters on all sides of electrical equipment.
